Organised Sound (2013)
Volume 6: Organised Sound. Sound and Perception in 20th- and 21st-Century Music
edited by Christian Utz, 2013
To argue that the category »sound« emancipated itself in the twentieth century is a truism. Music research pursues the aim of specifying in what respect these »new« approaches to sound really differ from »sound composition« of past centuries, and which discourses in compositional aesthetics, cultural history, and theories of perception have formed the background to their development. The contributions to this volume, based on a symposium held in 2011 at the Graz University of Music and Performing Arts, revolve around the interactions between sound and perception from diverse perspectives: music analysis, music history, the history of music theory, music aesthetics, and psychoacoustics. Proceeding from the diagnosis of a »sound forgottenness« (introduced in a nuanced manner) and emphasizing different aspects, they formulate desiderata and impulses for future research.
