PETAL - Interpretation of Research Findings and Dissemination of Results

The workshops do not aim to produce reliable empirical data but are rather conceived as explorations into the central areas of the PETAL project – performance and perception and their relationship to analysis – eventually providing tools to modify, amend or expand the basic research strategy. The workshops will be documented in audio recordings and in part also in video recordings; the discussions most relevant to the PETAL research will be transcribed in text form to be used in the project team’s publications.

Research findings from all three areas will be interconnected using an elaborated electronic metadata and keyword system. This means that relevant research materials resulting from all three components will be stored in a digital database. Tendencies and categories derived from the areas HR and PR will be rethought and reformulated according to the DR-based materials, involving research methods based in grounded theory (Glaser/Strauss 1967; see Kokotsaki 2007 for an application to musical performance studies). The database will serve as the main tool in this process and facilitate the interdisciplinary tasks bridging historical, empirical, analytical and practical discourses. Parts of the documentation will be made accessible through a project website.

The results of the project will be communicated via a number of peer-reviewed articles in open access journals as well as in a dissertation by the doctoral researcher and a second monograph (possibly serving as a Habilitation) by the post-doctoral researcher (see II.). The documentation of the workshop will result in an open access edited volume, collecting written versions of the up to 15 presentations from the three workshops (with conscious responsive interaction between the different disciplines involved), supplemented by audio and video material on the project website, as well as annotated score editions that document the workshop’s discussions directly in the score, exemplifying the pluralistic approach of PETAL analysis and providing a framework for a variety of contrasting practical interpretations.
